Emla® Cream is a local anaesthetic used to numb the skin before minor procedures, such as injections, blood tests, tattoos, piercings, or aesthetic treatments. It contains a combination of lidocaine (2.5%) and prilocaine (2.5%), which work together to block pain signals in the treated area.

It’s widely used in both clinical and cosmetic settings for adults and children.

What Is Emla Cream Used For?

How to Use
  • Apply a thick layer of cream to the affected area
  • Cover with an occlusive dressing (if provided)
  • Leave on for 60 minutes before the procedure
  • Remove the dressing and wipe away the cream just before treatment

Do not use on broken or irritated skin unless advised by a prescriber.

Who Can Use Emla Cream?

  • Adults and children from 1 year of age (with dosage adjustments)
  • Suitable for temporary numbing before superficial procedures
Not suitable if you:
  • Are allergic to local anaesthetics (lidocaine/prilocaine)
  • Have a rare blood disorder called methaemoglobinaemia
  • Use certain heart medications (check with prescriber)
  • Are applying to large or broken areas of skin
