Emerres, also known as the branded version of Levonelle, is a single-dose emergency contraceptive containing levonorgestrel 1.5mg. It’s designed to reduce the risk of pregnancy when taken within 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure.
The earlier you take it, the more effective it is. Emerres is available without a prescription following a short consultation.
How Emerres (Levonelle) Works
Emerres contains levonorgestrel, which works by delaying ovulation, preventing the release of an egg from the ovary. This means there is no egg available for fertilisation, helping to prevent pregnancy.
It will not interrupt an existing pregnancy and is not a substitute for regular contraception.
How to Take
Take one 1.5mg tablet as soon as possible after unprotected sex
Must be taken within 72 hours (3 days)
If vomiting occurs within 3 hours, another dose may be needed
You can continue your regular contraception immediately after use
It’s safe to use more than once per cycle if necessary, but this is not advised as a routine method
Who Can Use Emerres
Emerres is suitable for most women aged 16 and over.
Do not take Emerres if you:
Are already pregnant
Have severe liver problems
Are allergic to levonorgestrel or any ingredients
Are taking medications that reduce its effectiveness (e.g. epilepsy medicines, rifampicin, St John’s Wort)

Most side effects are mild and temporary. These may include:
Nausea or abdominal discomfort
Fatigue or dizziness
