What Is the Flu?

Flu is a viral infection that typically spreads during autumn and winter. It is transmitted through droplets in the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks.

Unlike the common cold, flu symptoms tend to appear suddenly and can be more intense.

Common Symptoms of Flu
  • High temperature (38°C or above)
  • Body aches and chills
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Dry cough or sore throat
  • Headache or blocked nose
  • Loss of appetite

Most symptoms clear within 5–7 days, but fatigue can linger for longer.

Who Can Use Flu Treatments?

Treatment suitability depends on your age, medical history, and how soon you start treatment.

You should seek urgent medical help if you:

  • Have chest pain, shortness of breath, or confusion
  • Are pregnant and have flu symptoms
  • Have flu and an underlying health condition (e.g. asthma, heart disease)
  • Experience symptoms that worsen after initial improvement

Symptoms of Flu

Flu (influenza) is a contagious viral infection that comes on suddenly and severely, affecting the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. Unlike the common cold, flu symptoms tend to be more intense and long-lasting.

Common symptoms include:

  • High temperature (fever) – usually 38°C or above

  • Sudden onset of tiredness or fatigue

  • Muscle aches and body pain

  • Sore throat and dry cough

  • Chills and shivering

  • Headache

  • Blocked or runny nose

  • Loss of appetite

  • Occasionally, nausea or vomiting

Flu typically lasts 5 to 7 days, though fatigue can linger longer. Treatments such as Tamiflu® (Oseltamivir) can help reduce the duration and severity of symptoms when taken within 48 hours of onset.

How to Take Flu Treatments

Antiviral treatments such as Tamiflu® can help shorten the duration of influenza (flu) and reduce the severity of symptoms if taken promptly.

  • Start treatment as soon as possible — ideally within 48 hours of the first flu symptoms appearing.

  • Take the capsule orally with water, with or without food.

  • If nausea occurs, it is often helpful to take Tamiflu with food.

  • Complete the full course even if you begin to feel better after a few days.

Early treatment provides the greatest benefit in reducing flu symptoms and the risk of complications.

Common Questions About Flu

What is the flu?

The flu (influenza) is a highly contagious viral infection that affects the respiratory system. It is typically more severe than a common cold and can cause significant symptoms lasting several days.

Common symptoms include:

  • High fever (above 38°C)

  • Muscle aches and joint pain

  • Headache

  • Sore throat and dry cough

  • Fatigue and weakness

  • Chills and sweats

Some people may also experience nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea, though this is more common in children.

Flu symptoms tend to appear suddenly and are generally more severe than those of a cold. While a cold mainly affects the nose and throat, the flu often causes body-wide symptoms like fever, muscle aches, and extreme tiredness.

Most people recover from the flu with rest, fluids, and over-the-counter medicines to relieve symptoms.

Prescription antiviral medications like Tamiflu® (Oseltamivir) may be recommended for people at higher risk of complications or if treatment is started within 48 hours of symptom onset.

Higher risk groups include:

  • People aged over 65

  • Pregnant women

  • Those with long-term medical conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, heart disease)

  • People with weakened immune systems

Prompt antiviral treatment may be advised for these groups.

The best prevention is the annual flu vaccine.

Good hygiene measures, such as regular handwashing and avoiding close contact with infected individuals, can also reduce the risk.

Antivirals like Tamiflu® are generally well tolerated. Possible side effects include:

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Headache

  • Mild stomach upset

Severe side effects are rare but should be reported to a healthcare professional if they occur.
